An unidentified man jumped off the Washington Avenue Bridge shortly before 9:00 p.m. Wednesday evening but had not yet been found as of press time.
Police said they think the jump was a successful suicide.
The man is described by police to be 20 to 30 years old, but it is not known if he was a University student.
University police said they received the 911 call at 9:00 p.m.
The woman who placed the 911 call said she saw the man hit the water but not come back up, Sgt. Dave Wilske of University Police said.
If the man sank to the bottom of the river, his body isn’t likely to resurface for a few days, Wilske added.
Six UMPD squads responded at the scene and were using boats and a helicopter to locate the body, but appeared to be leaving the scene around 10:45 p.m.
