Oto Osenieks will be honored at the Gophers’ Senior Day on Sunday when Minnesota takes on Penn State.
That’s because Osenieks won’t be competing next season, the University announced Wednesday afternoon.
Osenieks, a junior, said last month that he had been dealing with irritation in his left knee. He said he had surgery on his knee seven years ago and recent pain made it hurt to run and jump.
“Oto has been a joy to work with and be around,” head coach Richard Pitino said in a release. “Unfortunately, this injury will limit his ability to continue playing beyond this season.”
Osenieks has missed the last two contests with the knee injury, but it’s unknown whether he’s out for the rest of this season.
The University will seek a medical non-counter waiver on Osenieks’ behalf, the release said. That waiver would allow Osenieks to keep his scholarship for his final year of eligibility but would also free up a scholarship for the basketball team for next season.
