The 110-foot, 150,000-gallon water tower that overlooks Prospect Park will mark its 100th year this weekend.
Though the Witch's Hat Water Tower is usually open one day a year, it will be open to the public July 12-13. The weekend will also feature tours of the neighborhoods historic homes, according to the Prospect Park and East River Road Improvement Association’s website.
Frederick William Cappelen, Minneapolis City Engineer, was commissioned to build the tower in 1913 and finished construction the next year. The tower stopped its run as a water tower in 1952, the website says.
In 1997 the tower and Tower Hill Park, where the tower is located, were placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
