Minnesota women’s soccer goalkeeper Molly Schneider was named to the All-Big Ten Tournament team.
The senior Rochester native allowed one goal in the Gophers’ 1-0 first-round loss to Illinois. She made six saves in the game.
It was the second time this week Schneider was honored by the Big Ten. She was named to the All-Big Ten first team for the regular season Wednesday. On the season, Schneider led the conference in saves, was second in shutouts and second in goals against average.
Wisconsin, which won the Big Ten Tournament to earn the conference’s automatic NCAA Tournament berth, had two players named Big Ten Tournament Most Valuable Players. Senior forward Amy Vermeulen was the offensive MVP and senior defender Jessica Ring was the tournament’s defensive MVP.
The Gophers, 9-8-2 and currently on the tournament bubble, will have to wait until Monday’s 3 p.m. selection show on ESPNEWS to find out if they make the NCAA Tournament.
Men sweep weekend
Minnesota’s men’s swimming and diving team dominated North Carolina and North Dakota en route to a 2-0 weekend at the University Aquatic Center.
The ninth-ranked Gophers defeated the Tarheels 231-133 and the Sioux 262-85 in the triple-dual meet which was contested Friday and Saturday.
The Gophers won 17 of the 20 events contested in the two-day contest. Senior Adam Mitchell won two events. He took first in the 200-yard individual medley Friday night and followed that with a win in the 400-yard individual medley on Saturday.
Minnesota travels to Atlanta next week for a dual meet with Georgia Tech at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Women split
Minnesota’s women’s swimming and diving team split a pair of dual meets with North Carolina and North Dakota at the University Aquatic Center this weekend.
The 25th-ranked Gophers topped North Dakota 305-59, but fell to No. 22 North Carolina 189-181 in Friday and Saturday’s triple-dual meets. Minnesota is now 4-2 in dual meets this year.
The Gophers took the top two spots in the 200-yard backstroke. Senior Katie Wind won the event in 2:02.11, while freshman Jenny Shaughnessy was second with a time of 2:05.48.
Minnesota also swept the top two places in the 500 freestyle. Freshman Christine Jennings took first in 4:49.62, and freshman Yuen Kobayashi was second with a time of 4:50.57.
Next weekend, the Gophers have a dual meet at Notre Dame at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Tennis struggles down South
Minnesota’s women’s tennis team had a rough go of things at the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Saturday.
The Gophers took on Furman in singles events and Wake Forest in doubles. Minnesota went 2-3 in singles matches and was winless in four tries in doubles.
The only Gophers players to win Saturday were 86th-ranked Nischela Reddy and Danielle Mousseau against Furman.
