The Gophers headed into the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown after a poor showing at their last tournament.
But they bounced back, finishing tied for first in Nevada.
“There’s some resilience there,” head coach Michele Redman said. “We just came off of one of the worst tournaments that we’ve ever had since I’ve been here, and then we came back and [won] the next one, and I think that shows a lot about the character of the ladies we have on our team.”
Freshman Celia Kuenster recorded a hole-in-one on Monday and finished the tournament third overall.
Kuenster finished the tournament 4-under par, and fellow freshman Sabrine Garrison finished 2-under par.
As a team, the Gophers shot 278 in the third round, setting a program record in the process with their best total of the three rounds in Las Vegas.
“We’ve been starting out well in probably every tournament that we’ve played this year. We just haven’t finished well, and I think that was the key to this tournament,” Redman said.
Minnesota finished the tournament 1-under par.
“I was really impressed and really happy with how the team handled themselves,” Redman said.
Men falter in Royal Oaks
Despite a tie for fourth place from sophomore Jose Mendez, the Gophers men’s golf team faltered at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate.
The team finished 11th of 12 schools competing, and head coach John Carlson said the team underperformed on Tuesday.
The Gophers shot 378 as a team a day after shooting 371 in the second round.
“I think our score was maybe our lowest team score until our last two holes, which maybe set us up for a tough round today,” Carlson said. “We just didn’t finish well as a team.”
With the tournament, the Gophers concluded their fall schedule.
Freshman Rúnar Arnórsson finished second among Gophers competing, shooting 12-over par.
“Rúnar has kind of solidified himself as someone who is going to be in the lineup,” Carlson said.
He also said he’d like to see other underclassmen step up.
“We really need one of the freshman other than Rúnar and the sophomore class — they’ve got a lot of weight on their shoulders. Someone in that group … has to separate themselves over the offseason,” Carlson said.
The Gophers won the Big Ten championship last year, and Carlson said the team needs to be more consistent if it’s going to repeat.
“Other than Jose, I still think everyone has to get more consistent,” Carlson said.
Mendez has been a constant for the Gophers this fall, finishing first among his teammates in all of their tournaments.
“It’s pretty phenomenal the accomplishments he’s making here at the University,” Carlson said.
