The Minnesota men’s tennis team lost its opening spring Big Ten dual this weekend, falling 6-1 to second-ranked Ohio State Sunday afternoon at the Baseline Tennis Center.

The two-time defending Big Ten Champion Buckeyes are now on a 24-match conference winning streak after disposing of the Gophers.

Minnesota (2-10 overall, 0-1 Big Ten) dropped the doubles point quickly, then proceeded to lose five-of-six singles matches.

The lone victory for coach Geoff Young’s squad was at No. 4 singles where sophomore Dino Bilankov defeated OSU’s Shuhei Uzawa 4-6, 6-3 (10-7).

Former Minnesota head coach David Geatz is in his first year as an assistant coach for the Buckeyes.

Sometimes things just aren’t meant to be.

That was certainly the case as the Minnesota softball team’s weekend at the Buzz Classic in Woodstock, Ga., was interrupted by inclement weather.

An odd combination of heavy rain, tornadoes, bitter cold, wind and snow forced tournament officials to cancel all games.

After winning his second-straight Big Ten title, Gophers Women’s track and field head coach Matt Bingle was also named Big Ten Coach of the Year for the second-straight year.

Bingle led the Gophers to their second-straight title this year in just his second year as head coach. He also served as an assistant head coach, then an associate head coach, than an interim head coach for Minnesota.

Liz Roehrig also was recognized in the Big Ten Awards, being named the Big Ten Field Event Athlete of the Year.

Roehrig made weighty history at the conference championships, becoming the first Minnesota athlete in any sport to win four titles in the same event, scoring 4,218 points to win her fourth-straight pentathlon.

Roehrig, pole vaulter Alicia Rue and Liz Podominick were named to the All-Big Ten first team. Rue broke a school record in winning her first conference title, while Podominick won the shot put with a throw of 15.66 meters.
