The Minneapolis Police Department and the University of Minnesota Police Department had a busy week responding to various reports of violent and property crimes around the University and surrounding neighborhoods.
Multiple burglaries, robberies and other crimes were reported in the area, including four late-night robberies in the Como neighborhood.
MPD arrested an Oregon woman and a California man for robbery at Dinkytown Wine and Spirits early Tuesday morning. They were found in possession of a knife, which was reportedly used in the robbery. Both arrestees were booked at Hennepin County Jail. The two were out on bond awaiting trial for a previous aggravated robbery from June, according to Hennepin County court documents.
A 21-year-old student’s house on the 900 block of 17th Avenue SE in Como was reportedly burglarized sometime between 12:30 a.m. and 6 a.m. Friday. The victim told MPD that an unknown person entered the house through an unlocked front door. She could not give the police a description of the suspect.
MPD responded to another burglary at a house on the 1000 block of 18th Avenue SE in Como that occurred sometime between midnight Friday and noon Sunday. The 25-year-old male victim told MPD the only loss was a bicycle valued at $4,500. He was also unable to give police a description of the suspect.
There was another reported burglary at 3:20 a.m. Thursday at an apartment building located on the 400 block of 11th Avenue SE in Como. The 21-year-old victim told MPD she saw a person in her bedroom take some of her belongings. The suspect was gone upon police arrival.
MPD responded to a fourth burglary this week, at a house in the 1000 block of 24th Avenue SE in Como. The 21-year-old victim told officers an unknown male entered her house and stole a purse sometime between 4 and 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. She was able to give limited information to the police.
MPD Crime Specialist Nick Juarez said the Second Precinct plans on increasing patrol in areas afflicted with high numbers of burglaries, including the Como neighborhood.
The Minnesota Board of Pharmacy’s office at 2829 University Ave. SE was reportedly robbed sometime between 6 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday. One victim told MPD the suspect entered the business via the reception counter window.
MPD responded to a call of shots fired outside of an office building on 701 Main St. SE around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. Officers found several spent shell casings at the scene, which were put into inventory.
MPD is investigating a shooting that left one man dead near the University’s West Bank campus around 12:53 a.m. Tuesday. The incident marks the second death near the University in less than 48 hours – MPD is also investigating a fight leading to man’s death near TCF Bank Stadium Sunday at 11:02 p.m.
