With a new team, current St. Olaf and former Minnesota menâÄôs cross country coach Phil Lundin produced results similar to those during his time with the Gophers, as the OlesâÄô Dobuol Ruon took top honors at his home meet on Saturday. Ruon posted a winning time of 15:58 over the 8K course, which served as an early season test for Minnesota. Lakeville, Minn., natives and Gophers runners Tim Bruhn and Paul Hilsen finished second and third, respectively. Bruhn, a sophomore for Minnesota this season, crossed the finish line at the 16:26 mark while Hilsen, a red-shirt freshman, crossed one second later. Senior Hans Storvick and sophomore Joe McFarland also posted top-15 finishes for Minnesota. It was an enjoyable day for Lundin, who saw successes from his new athletes as well as some of his old ones. âÄúIt was fun to see the guys again,âÄù Lundin, who left Minnesota after last season to take the head coaching position at St. Olaf, said. âÄúBefore the meet, it was good to catch up with them. However, the move hasnâÄôt been all fun for Lundin. âÄúThe transition has been a little harder than I thought,âÄù Lundin said. âÄúIâÄôd been at the [University] for 25 years. I knew who to go to with issues and I knew who to avoid.âÄù In terms of talent, Lundin is pleased with his new crop of athletes, although there are obvious differences between the two programs. At Division III St. Olaf, Lundin has adjusted to athletes that âÄúhave passions outside of athleticsâÄù and a school that is far different from Minnesota in terms of athletic philosophy and budgeting. Recruitment is also a tougher chore with an elite private school that lacks the Big Ten amenities the Gophers have. But in a phone interview Sunday, Lundin said it was simply his time to move on. âÄúThe Gophers are well taken care of,âÄù he said. âÄúI left it in a better situation.âÄù
