Minnesota’s men’s track and field team claimed first and second place in the shot put on Saturday at the Wisconsin Elite Invitational in Madison this past weekend.

Senior Karl Erickson won the event with a season-best throw of 61-1 1/4. That improved his NCAA provisional qualifying mark by more than two feet.

Junior Adam Schnaible took second, setting a new personal best with a toss of 59-8 1/4. His throw was also an NCAA provisional qualifier.

The Gophers took second through fourth place in the high jump in Madison. Freshman Parker Robinson finished second, jumping a personal best of 6-11 3/4. Seniors Kevin Netzer and John Albert took third and fourth, respectively.

Minnesota next competes Friday and Saturday at the Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.

Women claim a title

Sophomore Liz Roehrig broke her own Minnesota women’s track and field school-record on Friday at the UNI Invitational in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Roehrig claimed four first-places in five events, en route to tallying 3,999 points. The mark was enough to qualify her provisionally for the NCAA meet. Junior Maggie Jaunich was second in the competition.

Junior Liz Alabi took a first and a second in Cedar Falls on Saturday. She won the weight throw with a toss of 60- 3 3/4, and placed second in the shot put with a throw of 49-4 1/4.

Also on the second day of the UNI Invitational, freshman Caitlin Roemhildt won the high jump. She took the title by jumping a personal-best 5-8.

The Gophers will take to the track again next weekend in South Bend, Ind., at the Meyo Invitational.
