Head basketball coach Tubby Smith appeared at a Washington, D.C. rally with HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Sen. Al Franken and Sen. Amy Klobuchar on Tuesday to promote the final push for health care reform. Joining Smith were Notre Dame’s Mike Brey, Georgetown’s John Thompson III, Ed DeChellis of Penn State, and Clemson’s Oliver Purnell.
Smith is one of hundreds of college coaches involved with Coaches vs. Cancer, a group affiliated with the American Cancer Society which has raised nearly $50 million for cancer research.
In a speech on Tuesday, Franken said that Smith has "…made us even more proud with his tireless efforts to end cancer. The most important thing we must do for cancer patients right now is to pass national health reform. Today, there are thousands of cancer patients who are going without the care they need."
