Longtime Minnesota baseball volunteer assistant coach Herb Isakson died over the weekend.
“Ike,” as he was known around the program, was with the Gophers from 1964 to 1997.
He had his No. 5 retired in 1998 shortly after his tenure ended.
Isakson served under head coaches Dick Siebert, George Thomas and John Anderson while at Minnesota.
“I don’t think you can talk about Gopher baseball without including Herb Isakson in that conversation,” Anderson, the program’s current head coach, said in a statement. “He’s connected to generations of former players here in this program and loved the Golden Gophers; Maroon and Gold, through and through.”
Isakson coached teams that made 17 postseason appearances, won 11 Big Ten titles and attended the College World Series three times. He was part of the team when it won the national championship in 1964.
Isakson played in the St. Louis Cardinals organization before coaching for the Gophers.
