This is an update to a previous post about former Gophers center Janel McCarville. Since then, McCarville has stated her case via her twitter account.
After being suspended for the entire WNBA season by the New York Liberty for failing to make training camp, McCarville apparently returned home to be with her family. She was going to be fined $1,000 because her Italian professional basketball season stretched late.
Per her twitter account: “Hello everyone, sorry for keeping you in suspense this whole time! I am enjoy’n life at home with my family and loved ones! thanks for asking.” June 12.
Her latest tweet before that had come a month earlier while finishing her professional season overseas in Italy. This led to speculation by a Yahoo! columnist that for selfish reasons because McCarville never issued a press release announcing why she missed camp.
That ambiguity remained at the time, but McCarville did respond to the report via twitter with a tweet that linked to the article and also said: “Opinions are like a**holes, everyones got one,get facts 1st!”
She explained her absence with the following series of tweets: “to kill some of the rumors, the reason i am not playing is NOT cause of my contract overseas, NOR am i hurt. planned on being in camp, but..”
…
“For the record, my season ended in Italy on may 11 at 10pm. I was on flight out at 8am on the 13th. Had 24hr travel. Home on the 14th @ 1am”
“The same day I’m supposed to report to camp.. I couldn’t get 4-5 days to hug n kiss my family or unpack/repack my bags. I was already taking an enormous fine all because my season went late in Italy.. In my eyes – $1000 a day is a bit steep! And I didn’t stand for it.. Not everyone knows all the details, so before you pass judgemet on others, get ya facts straight!”
