Former Gophers wide receiver Damien White was shot early Sunday morning outside a Los Angeles nightclub. According to a police report, White, 19, and the suspect were seen fighting outside of the club at 1:05 a.m. that morning. The suspect, who remains unidentified, drew a handgun and shot White . After sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, including one in the head , White drove his car several blocks before collapsing at a nearby gas station, the police report said. At 1:30 a.m. Los Angeles City Fire Paramedics found the victim and pronounced him dead. âĂ„ĂşThe entire Minnesota athletics family was hit hard when we received the news,âĂ„Ăą a statement from the UniversityâĂ„Ă´s athletics department said. âĂ„ĂşThe loss of young life is always a tragedy and our heartfelt condolences go out to his entire family as we grieve with them.âĂ„Ăą White attended Culver City High School in Culver City, Calif., where he scored in each game of his senior year season. Recruited by the Gophers in 2007 as a wide receiver, he redshirted that same year. âĂ„ĂşDamien was an engaging and likable young man who we all enjoyed working with. He will be missed,âĂ„Ăą the statement from the athletics department said. Before the start of the 2008 season, White left the University after receiving poor grades. He moved back to California and attended El Camino College in Torrance , where he practiced with the schoolâĂ„Ă´s football team in hopes of continuing his athletic career . The Los Angeles Police Department doesnâĂ„Ă´t have a suspect description or a motive for the crime. The weapon used by the suspect is still missing as well. LAPD are investigating whether the crime was a gang-related incident. According to the LAPD, no further developments have been made in the case.
