The 2020 Tokyo Olympics is now the latest in sports postponements, veteran member of the International Olympic Committee Dick Pound told USA Today Sports on Monday afternoon. The event is likely to be pushed to 2021 with details to be hashed out in the coming weeks.
As the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic has escalated globally in the past few weeks, the possibility of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics continuing as planned seemed improbable. The outlook became even more uncertain over the past few days, as influential groups began pushing for postponement. Canada was the first country to announce that it would not send a group of athletes unless the games were postponed. Australia, Brazil, Norway and Germany made similar statements, as did USA Swimming and USA Track and Field.
The push came after Thomas Bach, president of the IOC, made comments Sunday that the decision would be made over the next four weeks. The final call was made just a day later.
Though the Olympics have been canceled in the past during wartime, this would be the first postponement in 76 years.
Several Gophers had good chances to make Olympic teams this year, including heavyweight wrestler Gable Steveson, gymnast Shane Wiskus and divers Sarah Bacon and Kristen Hayden.
