A heavy fire early Thursday morning partially destroyed a two-story house at 804 13th Ave. SE and damaged another.
No one was injured, according to a release from the Minneapolis Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to a call at about 2:20 a.m. and started attacking the fire, according to the release. The fire then spread into the neighboring building’s attic, at which point a second alarm was called for backup.
Retail merchandising senior Meghan Gilbert lives in the house with two other women. Gilbert wasn’t home at the time of the fire and had most of her valuables with her. But she said the fire destroyed everything in the house, including furniture, TVs and clothes.
About half of the house’s porch had collapsed by Thursday afternoon. Several passing drivers on Southeast Eighth Street stopped to photograph the damage.
Crystal Yakacki, who lives across the street from Gilbert and her roommates, said she and her husband woke up at about 2:30 a.m. to the sound of people screaming. She said she saw flames rising 10 feet from Gilbert’s porch.
It took three fire hoses and about half an hour to put the fire out, Yakacki said.
“I had no idea that a house could set ablaze that fast,” she said.
