A hacker struck their third target Thursday — the University of Minnesota, the Star Tribune reported.
Vigilance, the hacker, infiltrated the University in response to the recent acquittal of ex-officer Jeronimo Yanez in the shooting of Philando Castile last summer.
Tweeting the event, Vigilance said they found poor security on a University website and that some reporters would discover this in their emails.
Steven Henneberry, spokesman for the University, said in an email that he cannot confirm or deny any reported actions.
“[The University] “routinely monitors their environment for security incidents, including any compromises,” Henneberry said in the email.
Before the University hack, Vigilance targeted Minnesota State University Moorhead and State of Minnesota government databases.
“Minnesota IT Services is aware of this attack and is investigating the incident. Minnesota IT Services’ security forensics team will share any relevant information with law enforcement for review for potential criminal activity,” said Minnesota IT Services in an email.
According to Minnesota officials, the breach had no impact on major business systems that support state government operations. The attack affected subscribers to state geographic information and energy program newsletters.
The investigation was later turned over to the FBI.
