Hennepin County broke ground Monday afternoon on a transportation hub in downtown Minneapolis called the Interchange, to open in spring of 2014.
Located next to Target Field, the Interchange will connect the Hiawatha Light Rail Transit, the Northstar Commuter Rail, and the Central Corridor Light Rail Transit, as well as local buses and bike trails.
It will include a train platform and a large plaza with green space and potential for business development.
Hennepin County will fund nearly half of the $79.3 million project, the Star Tribune reported, with other funds stemming from a mix of federal, state and local sources. Knutson Construction of St. Louis Park will carry out the construction.
