I am so annoyed with all of the letters written in support of the University of Minnesota Police DepartmentâÄôs use of the term âÄúEast African accent.âÄù Not only are we grouping people together based on skin color, we are grouping them according to their particular place of origin. What about South Africa? Should the UMPD also give the students lessons on how to recognize that accent as well? Racism is racism; black men and men of color do not need to have more distinctive marks placed on them than there already are. I hope that I will be able to get my next police alert with a description of a white male with a North Dakota accent; we will find him quickly then. Tara Kline University undergraduate student
