Two-time All-American junior Jayson Ness led his teammates to another dominant performance at the Bison Open in Fargo this weekend. Ness picked up his third straight championship, one of eight titles the Gophers won. Sophomore Scott Glasser went 5-0 for the weekend to also claim his third straight Bison Open championship. Ness, however, was in a different weight class than previous years. He moved from 125 to 133, which was expected going into the season. âÄúJason is just a hard-nosed kid. He wrestles hard, heâÄôs always thinking about scoring points, and you can see it when heâÄôs out on the mat,âÄù assistant coach Brandon Eggum said. For others, keeping the weight off is something the team is trying to work on now as it can often be a problem later. âÄúIf guys donâÄôt get their weight down the proper way, and do it the right way, they try to crash at the end, which some guys do. It obviously has a huge impact on their performance,âÄù Eggum said. The Bison Open, almost always dominated by Minnesota, was more of an opportunity to work on strategies for the upcoming season and to just have fun. âÄú[ItâÄôs] the little strategic things that play a big role in the performance on the mat,âÄù Eggum said. The freshmen, true and redshirts alike, also had a strong weekend, including Mario Mason and Brian Peterson , who were announced co-champions of the 149-pound weight class . âÄúThe young guys did great,âÄù Eggum said. âÄúIt was interesting to watch those guys wrestle and see the things they do very well but you can also see that a lot of them have a lot of areas where they need improvement in,âÄù Eggum said. The Gophers had four co-championships over the weekend, as many Minnesota wrestlers ended up facing each other in the championship match. In this situation, a co-championship was called. The other co-championship came from the 157 pound weight class, with three-time All-American senior Dustin Schlatter and senior Tyler Safratowich going 3-0 on the way to their victories.
