Kill to Kill is the coolest kind of band âÄî the one with a hot chick singer who plays the bass, like the two Kims: Gordon (Sonic Youth) and Deal (Pixies). The fact that the up-and-coming Minneapolis group credits the aforementioned bands as influences is audible in their noise-rock screeching riffs and the pleasing caterwauling from the throat of its redheaded frontwoman, Sylvia Izabella. If Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs was magically possessed with the smoky sexiness of Cat Power and fronted a band made up of Thurston Moore and experimental Velvet Underground, youâÄôd get Kill to Kill. In an interview with Northern Outpost, a Minneapolis-centric web series, the band expressed its desire âÄî half-jokingly âÄî to do a tour of Minnesota. It would be a âÄúhomegrown tour,âÄù set to stop at Fargo as well. The band also credited the cold for their lengthy practice sessions. A&E had the pleasure of speaking to affable drummer Joe Gaskill, who lives in Uptown, likes âÄúFlight of the ConchordsâÄù and has even been spotted from time to time at the Dinkytowner. Tell me a little bit about Kill to Kill. When did the band form and when did you join the band? They started about a year and a half, two years ago. I met them [the band: Sylvia Izabella, vocals/bass/baritone guitar; Chad Weber, bass/baritone guitar] when I saw a show with them at the 7th Street Entry last summer and I thought they were great. I told them if anything goes wrong with their drummer, they should call me. Something did, and I was totally stoked and joined right up. Who are your inspirations? Which bands do you guys admire most? We donâÄôt model ourselves after any aesthetic. We basically go up there like we look; we donâÄôt get dressed up for shows. There are two bass guitars in the band. There are no actual guitars. Who writes the majority of the music? Is it a combined effort or are tasks divided up? Sylvia writes all the lyrics and Chad and Sylvia write riffs. The music parts are prolific. They write so much and they always have new stuff. ItâÄôs hard to keep up with them and we go to practice spaces and spend hours working on new stuff and practicing old stuff. When can we expect an album from Kill to Kill? Are you working on one? We are. The EP should be done next week but it probably wonâÄôt be released until June. WeâÄôre going to look around for somebody who wants to help us release it. WhereâÄôs your next show? Why should we come check it out? WeâÄôre playing at the Hexagon, Feb. 13. WeâÄôre only playing for 20 minutes because there are 12 bands playing. ItâÄôs a benefit for the HexagonâÄôs new sound system. But people should come because drinks are cheap and there are gonna be 12 bands. Plus, Kill to Kill kicks ass.
