In preparation for the Big Ten championships, the Minnesota womensâÄô track and field team will be staying close to home this weekend. The Gophers will compete in two local meets in St. Paul this week. A limited amount of athletes competed in the St. Thomas Twilight Meet on Wednesday and more will race in HamlineâÄôs Meet of the Unsaintly tomorrow. Minnesota is ranked No. 19 in the USTFCCCA National Poll on April 29. Texas A&M is No. 1 with Oregon and LSU following. Other Big Ten schools in the poll are Michigan at No. 11 and Penn State at No. 13. Senior Laura Massey competed yesterday in the pole vault at the Tommie Twilight Meet. She cleared 12 feet, 7½ inches and earned an NCCA qualifier. Red shirt freshman Sharyn Da hl won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of one minute, 2.74 seconds . Senior Caitlin Roemhildt and sophomore Natalie Devine took first and second in the high jump . First-year Becca Pilkerton took second in the pole vault. Saturday will feature Gophers sprinters, jumpers and throwers. Three first-year sprinters, Nyoka Giles, Kylie Peterson and Chimerem Okoroji will compete individually in the 100 and together in the 4×100 relay. With 20 Gophers claiming NCAA qualifiers, there are still some athletes without one. MinnesotaâÄôs 4×400 relay of first-year Adrienne Thomas, junior Rikita Butler, first-year Nyola Giles and senior Heather Dorniden will look to earn a regional qualifier in the event. Men at Hamline, Payton Jordan Invite The men will compete in two meets this week as well. Most of the team will stay in town and compete at the Hamline Meet of the Unsaintly. A smaller group of MinnesotaâÄôs top distance and middle distance runners will go to Stanford to run in the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational . At Stanford, sophomore Hassan Mead and junior Chris Rombough will compete in the 5,000-met er. Sayfe Jassim will compete in the 400 and seniors Hans Storvick and Walter Langkau will run the 800-meter race. Junior R.J. McGinnis is the Big Ten Field Event Athlete of the Week . This comes after he posted the third-best decathlon total in the NCAA this season, last week at the Drake Relays. His performance tallied 7,626 points and ranks him No. 3 in Minnesota decathlon history. This is McGinnisâÄô second Big Ten weekly award, but his first in the outdoor season.
