Hundreds of attendees enjoyed the onset of warm weather at the University of Minnesota’s annual Spring Jam festival Saturday.
With the influx of festival-goers around campus, the University of Minnesota Police Department and Minneapolis Police Department patrolled campus and issued a number of citations.
UMPD and MPD citations on Saturday were mostly given to nonstudents who were on campus and in the surrounding neighborhoods.
MPD and UMPD responded to a fight at The Marshall apartments at 7:15 p.m. Two women were cited for assault by MPD, and UMPD charged one of the arrestees with damage to property. Those arrested were taken to separate hospitals to be treated for injuries.
A citizen’s arrest was conducted by an assault victim around 4 p.m. MPD officers were flagged down at the intersection of 14th Avenue Southeast and 7th Street Southeast by the citizen and another victim. The suspect was cited for assault. A photo of the victim’s injuries were taken on an officer’s phone for evidence.
UMPD arrested a man at 12:41 a.m. while conducting a traffic stop at the intersection of 17th Avenue Southeast and Como Avenue Southeast. The 21-year-old was arrested on a DWI charge and a narcotics violation. He was booked at Hennepin County Jail.
UMPD officers were dispatched to East Bank Station at 4:02 a.m. on a report of a suspicious male. The suspect was then arrested for a warrant and booked at Hennepin County Jail. According to Hennepin County District Court records, the suspect has been convicted 11 other times, mostly for incidents of indecent exposure in 2016.
A car parked at the intersection of 2nd Street Southeast and 3rd Avenue Southeast was broken into sometime between 10 p.m. Saturday and 12:06 a.m. Sunday. The car’s front passenger-side window was smashed and several items were stolen, according to MPD. The three victims did not know a potential suspect. Several other cars in the area were damaged around the same time.
MPD officers observed a 22-year-old male spray-painting a concrete barrier around 9:15 p.m. on 8th Street Southeast. The suspect put the paint can in his bag and walked away from officers, according to MPD reports. The officers confronted the man and discovered a paint can in his bag. He was written a citation for damage to property.
UMPD and MPD also responded to multiple thefts Saturday, according to police reports.
