A jaywalking University of Minnesota student was hit by a car on the St. Paul campus last night after leaving class.
University student David Tambornino, 54, was struck near the intersection of Gortner and Buford avenues near the Learning and Environment Science Building, according to University police. Tambornino said he was heading to his vehicle and talking to a classmate after class.
UMPD responded to the scene around 5:30 p.m. and found Tambornino falling in and out of consciousness; he was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center with a head injury.
Multiple witnesses at the scene said Tambornino was walking outside the crosswalk. The driver, a professor in the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences, said he couldn’t see Tambornino in the night, according to the police report.
The sun set around 4:30 p.m. last night. The driver told police that Tambornino was wearing dark clothes.
