Recently graduated Minnesota men’s swimmers Justin Mortimer and Terry Silkaitis each had two medals through Tuesday at the World University Games in Izmir, Turkey.

On Monday, Mortimer won an individual silver in the 200-meter freestyle and a relay bronze with Silkaitis in the 4×200 free relay. Silkaitis also won a relay bronze Saturday, swimming the lead leg of the 4×100 free relay. He tied for fourth in the 100 free Sunday.

Lee-To sets record

Incoming men’s swimming and diving freshman Colin Lee-To won a U.S. Junior National title in the 50 free Sunday in Irvine, Calif., breaking the meet record with a time of 23.79.

Two other freshmen also competed. Adam Weis finished eighth in the 200 free Thursday, and Michael Vergeront won two relay golds in the 4×50 and 4×100 free relays.

Grier WUG update

Through Tuesday, Minnesota men’s basketball senior

Vincent Grier and the U.S. men’s basketball team had swept pool play and beaten China in the preliminary second round at the World University Games.

Grier, who was recently named to the Wooden Award Top 50 List, averaged 10 points per game through the first four games. The U.S. team plays the Czech Republic today.

Foreign Tour team 0-2

Men’s basketball sophomore Spencer Tollackson and the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Foreign Tour team lost the first two games of its trip, 143-117 to the Huesca Basketball Club on Saturday and 110-104 to VIC Barcelona on Monday.

Women’s track smarts

Minnesota’s women’s track and field team ranked third in Division I in team grade point average last season. The Gophers had a cumulative 3.425 team grade point average, ranking below Bradley and Missouri.

Women’s hoops, too

Minnesota’s women’s basketball team recently made the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 Team Honor Roll. The Gophers were ranked 25th with a 3.287 cumulative grade point average during the 2004-05 school year.
