The latest name to enter into the NCAA men’s basketball coaching rumor mill, is a former not the current Minnesota men’s basketball coach.
The Seattle Times first reported that Dan Monson, who parted ways with the Gophers on Nov. 30 2006 after his team got out to a 2-5 nonconference start, was a candidate for the Washington State job after Tony Bennett was hired at Virginia.
Monson does have Washington ties as he headed the Gonzaga men’s basketball team for two years, where he led the Bulldogs to a 52-17 record and a run to the Elite Eight in 1999 before taking a job with Minnesota.
Monson has been at Long Beach State for the last two years where he has seen relative success as he took a team that went an abysmal 6-25 in his first year to 15-14 and a second place finish in the Big West this past season.
