It seems that records are meant to be broken for the University of Minnesota menâÄôs track and field team. Sophomore Hassan Mead broke his own 5,000-meter record this weekend at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Stanford. His winning mark of 13 minutes, 28.45 seconds betters his previous record time by more than 15 seconds, which he set as a freshman at the NCAA championships. He is now qualified to compete in the NCAA Midwest Region championships later this month. MeadâÄôs time is the third fastest in the NCAA this season. Also at Stanford, senior Hans Storvick placed fourth in his 800-meter heat, with a season best time of 1:51.11 The Gophers were split up between Stanford and the Meet of the Unsaintly, hosted by Hamline in St. Paul, where Minnesota took home nine event titles. Five titles came on the track. Senior Ibrahim Kabia won the 100-meter dash with a season-best time of 10.48 seconds. He was also a part of the first-place 4×100-meter relay with redshirted freshmen Sean Duling and Blake Bowers and freshman Sean King. Senior Mike Linnemann won the 400 hurdles in 54.55 seconds, and junior Logan Stroman took first in the 800. Junior Matt Barrett rounded out the track titles with a win in the 5,000 with a time of 14:48.17. The other four event titles came in field events. Redshirt freshman Matt Clauer cleared a season-best 6 foot, 8 inches to win the high jump, and junior Raymond Blackledge also cleared a season best to earn the crown in the triple jump. Senior Andy Bastian won the hammer throw with a distance of 184-11, and redshirt freshman Addison Demer won the long jump. Senior Jerry Netland didnâÄôt win the discus, but earned an NCAA Midwest Regional qualifier with his throw of 169-11. Women win 13 events The women competed at the Hamline Meet of the Unsaintly in St. Paul and had four NCAA Midwest Regional championship qualifiers along with 13 event titles. Freshman Kylie Peterson won the 100-meter dash and earned a qualifier. Her time of 11.72 seconds was the fourth-fastest in Minnesota history. Sophomore Nikki Tzanakis earned the second qualifier with a personal best throw of 162 feet, 10 inches in the discus. Her throw is the best by a Gophers athlete this season. Sophomore Jamie Dittmar took second in the 800, and junior Amy Laskowske took second in the 5,000, but both earned qualifiers. Senior Heather Dorniden won the 800 and was part of the winning 4×400 relay. The relay team of freshman Adrienne Thomas, senior Julie Schwengler, Dittmar and Dorniden crossed the line in 3:47.66. Freshmen Chimerem Okoroji and Nyoka Giles, junior Chioma Omeoga and Peterson won the 4×100 relay. Junior Rikita Butler won the 400, redshirted freshman Kelly Staples won the 400 hurdles, junior Megan Duwell won the 5,000 and graduate student Felicitias Mensing won the 1,500. In field events, junior Alicia Rue won the pole vault, senior Christin Kingsley won the long jump and senior Caitlin Roemhildt won the high jump.
