A 20-year-old man was charged Wednesday with felony forgery stemming from a Sept. 16 incident at 718 Washington Ave. S.E.
According to the Hennepin County complaint, Sitthpone Pon Phoummpvahn entered the First Bank on Washington Avenue Sept. 16 and handed a cashier a check in the amount of $2,500. The check, from a South Dakota bank, was payable to Heung Wing Chai.
The cashier noticed that the man did not match the physical description on the identification card he had presented, according to the complaint.
An employee of the bank called Minneapolis police to the location. According to the complaint, the bank manager explained the reason bank personnel believed the check to be fraudulent.
After investigating the matter, police discovered that the account had been closed. The owners of the account, Anh T. Le and Van B. Le, said they did not issue the check, according to the complaint.
Phoummpvahn admitted to Minneapolis police that he presented the check to the cashier using false identification, according to the complaint.
He faces up to five years in prison or a maximum fine of $10,000, or both. Phoummpvahn is not in custody at this time.
