The Minnesota women’s basketball team granted the scholarship release of sophomore forward Korinne Campbell upon Campbell’s request Monday, the Athletic Communications office said.
Campbell played in 65 games for the Gophers during her two-year career, and started 19 games in her sophomore year before moving to a reserve role.
Campbell announced in a released statement that she plans on transferring at the end of the semester.
“Though I have enjoyed my two years at Minnesota, I’ve decided it’s best for me to transfer and look for a new opportunity,” she said. “I want to thank the coaches and my teammates and wish them good luck in years to come.”
Campbell averaged 6.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game last season.
Volleyball adds two during late signing
The Minnesota volleyball team took another step toward filling the void left after the exit of six players this offseason, signing two more to the roster during the late signing period.
High school senior libero Jessica Granquist of Blaine will begin her four-year eligibility with the Gophers, while junior outside hitter Pamela Luiz of Limeira, Brazil will transfer in from Frank Phillips College.
Both players are expected to make an immediate impact, according to the statements coach Mike Hebert made Tuesday.
Granquist had been expected to go to either Minnesota or Florida State and will likely jump into the back-end rotation with Christine Tan, who will be a junior, and Hailey Cowles, heading into her sophomore year.
Luiz meanwhile could see time as a right side hitter, which is where she earned two NCJAA All-American awards at Frank Phillips.
“What strikes me most about this recruiting class is it addressed all of our important needs as a team,” Hebert said. “This group has a lot of talent, but more importantly they all fit into the plans we have for the team this fall.”
Granquist and Luiz join setter Alex Blatt and middle blocker Ariana Filho as the four new additions to the 2008 team. Both Blatt and Filho committed during the early signing period.

Gophers add solid recruit
The Minnesota women’s tennis team has signed Polish Women’s Tennis Champion Magdalena Wiecha to a National Letter of Intent to attend the University next fall, Gophers coach Tyler Thomson said Tuesday.
Wiecha, a Brzesko, Poland native, is currently ranked 16th among all women’s players in Poland and was an under-20 national tournament champion in her home country.
With Minnesota state champion Nitooli Wilkins also already signed, Thomson said he is eager to see both players contribute immediately as freshmen.
“Magdalena completes a recruiting class that promises to be phenomenal,” Thomson said in a statement. “Both of these young women love tennis, love training and figure to be major components of our starting lineup as true freshmen.”
