Eight of the nine Minneapolis mayoral candidates are on the edges of their seats today, as they wait to see if they will receive the DFL endorsement at the Minneapolis Convention Center today.

Candidates attending include incumbent Betsy Hodges, Ward 3 City Council Member Jacob Frey, state Rep. Raymond Dehn, Tom Hoch, Aswar Rahman, activist Al Flowers, Jeffrey Sterling Olson, and Captain Jack Sparrow.

Nekima Levy-Pounds, who has yet to hold public office but told the Minnesota Daily earlier this year “[it] would be a breath of fresh air in city hall to have someone who is not part of the status quo”, is the only mayoral candidate not seeking DFL endorsement, and will not be attending the convention.

Dehn is a University of Minnesota alumnus and has an active student group — Students for Raymond Dehn — on campus. Frey has represented Minneapolis’ third ward since 2013, which covers Marcy Holmes and Dinkytown.

A candidate needs 60 percent of the convention’s delegates to secure a DFL endorsement. According to the Star Tribune, a mayoral candidate hasn’t been able to secure the DFL endorsement in a closely-contested election since 1979.

The mayoral election will take place Nov. 7.
