Minnesota’s wrestling team is ranked third in TheWrestlingMall.com preseason team rankings. The Gophers are coming off a three-year stretch in which they have captured three straight Big Ten championships, two NCAA championships and one NCAA runner-up finish.
Defending NCAA champion Oklahoma State is the preseason No. 1 pick, followed by Lehigh University. In all, five Big Ten teams are ranked in the top 10 and eight league teams are in the top 25. Illinois is ranked fifth, followed by No. 6 Iowa, No. 7 Michigan, No. 8 Penn State, No. 12 Ohio State, No. 22 Purdue and No. 25 Wisconsin.
Individually, defending NCAA champion Damion Hahn is ranked No. 1 at 197 pounds. Returning All-American Jacob Volkmann is ranked second at 165 pounds, while fellow All-American Bobbe Lowe is rated fifth at 125 pounds.
Women’s golf
Minnesota’s women’s golf team finished in 13th place Wednesday at the Shootout at the Legends The Gophers shot rounds of 302-311-308 = 921 to finish 44 shots behind tournament champion Kent State.
Individually, the Gophers were led by junior Terra Petsinger, who tied for 10th place at 4-over 22, after a final round of 73 Tuesday. It was Petsinger’s third top-10 finish in four fall tournaments.
