.Broken glass lined the streets of Dinkytown after homecoming last weekend.

At least five businesses had their doors broken early Sunday, and at least one more was broken sometime Sunday night or Monday morning.

Three businesses on University Avenue Southeast – the Student Bookstore, Dunn Bros Coffee and Gopher Market – as well as three more on Fourth Street Southeast and 14th Avenue Southeast – Espresso Royale, SaraCura and Gold Country – were damaged.

According to reports, five of the six businesses had their glass doors smashed, but only three businesses reported missing property.

Student Bookstore manager Alyssa Sommer said she was called by the store’s security company Sunday morning after the break-in.

The alarm went off at 3:20 a.m. An Xbox 360, a game controller and an iPod shuffle were taken, according to the Minneapolis police report.

Police believe the suspect in the Student Bookstore burglary then headed down University Avenue Southeast to Dunn Bros Coffee and broke the door there.

Dunn Bros owner John Gifford said security cameras showed the suspect wandering around the store from 3:28 to 3:30 a.m. The suspect opened a few cupboards and cash register drawers, Gifford said.

The suspect left without taking any money or merchandise, Gifford said, but left him with a broken door that cost $1,000 to replace.

Sometime after 3:30 a.m. but before 8 a.m., Gopher Market’s back door was forced into, but no glass was broken.

Gopher Market cashier Joseph Hamela, who reported the crime to Minneapolis police, found the store broken into and said the cash register and one of the money boxes was taken.

Gopher Market has an alarm system, but it didn’t go off at the time of the burglary.

Espresso Royale manager Chris Hill said its alarm system didn’t go off either when the store was broken into sometime between 12:15 a.m. and 6:45 a.m.

When Hill arrived Sunday morning, the front door was shattered and the cash drawers were taken, he said.

SaraCura owner Alice Marks said the door to her store was also broken Sunday morning, but no one entered the store and nothing was taken, as far as she could tell.

The alarm went off around 4:30 a.m. when the door was smashed. The door was replaced on Sunday but cost the new business almost $600.

Gold Country reported a similar incident to police on Monday morning after its door was kicked and smashed.

Gold Country manager Mike Kendall said the store has an alarm system, but it didn’t go off because none of the glass from the door broke off onto the floor. The glass spider-webbed and didn’t enter the store.

Minneapolis Police Sgt. Jesse Garcia said because five of the incidents happened on the same night at approximately the same time, it would lead him to believe they are connected.

Assault with a weapon near Melrose Student Suites

University student Srivathsan Subramanian was walking west on Delaware Street Southeast near 25th Avenue Southeast Sunday night when a man approached him and asked for directions to Dinkytown, according to University police reports.

While he was giving directions, the man pulled a gun from his coat pocket and threatened Subramanian.

When two other people walking on Delaware approached them, the suspect fled, according to the report.

Subramanian told police he believed the incident was a real threat and gave police a description of the suspect. He said another man appeared to be with the suspect, but was too far away to see clearly.
