.The new lineup, which will take effect for the 2006 season, replaces the Sun and Music City bowls with the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, Fla., and the Insight Bowl in Tempe, Ariz. The conference also extended its agreements with the Capital One, Outback and Alamo bowls through 2009. It has an agreement with the Rose Bowl through 2013.
Minnesota posted a 31-30 victory against Oregon in the 2003 Sun Bowl and beat Alabama 20-16 in the 2004 Music City Bowl.
U golfer falters in Open
Former Minnesota men’s golfer Wilhelm Schauman missed the cut at the British Open on Friday at St. Andrews Old Course in Scotland.
Schauman fell victim to a first-round 9-over-par 81. He shot a 1-under 71 in the second round but still missed the cut by seven strokes. His final score was tied for 135th out of 155 golfers. The Sweden native had three double bogeys on the back nine Thursday but had five birdies Friday.
He qualified for the Open Championship by earning one of two spots in a seven-player playoff at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J.
Former asst. coach dies
Longtime Minnesota football assistant coach George “Butch” Nash died Monday. He was 89.
After playing with the Gophers from 1937-38, Nash began coaching in 1947 and finished his Minnesota career in 1991.
Nash worked under coaches Bernie Bierman, Wes Fesler, Murray Warmath, Cal Stoll, Joe Salem, Lou Holtz and John Gutekunst. The Gophers have given a Butch Nash Award since 1984, honoring competitiveness in the field and in the classroom.
Seven at Lake Placid
A group of seven current and former Minnesota women’s hockey players were invited to the USA Hockey National Women’s Festival in Lake Placid, N.Y., Aug. 18-25, USA Hockey announced July 13.
Natalie Darwitz, Kelly Stephens, Lyndsay Wall and Krissy Wendell led the Gophers to their second-straight national title last year. Former Gophers Winny Brodt, Courtney Kennedy and Laura Slominski were also invited to the festival, which serves as the selection camp for the 2005-06 women’s national team that will train for the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Italy.
Twenty of the 40 players at the camp will make the Olympic roster.
Silkaitis fast in 100 free
Former Minnesota men’s swimmer Terry Silkaitis posted the fifth-fastest time by an American this year when he swam the 100-meter freestyle in 50.74 at the Janet Evans Invitational in Los Angeles on Friday.
Silkaitis and former Gophers teammate Justin Mortimer will swim for the United States in the World University Games in Izmir, Turkey, Aug. 11-21.
Baseball’s golf outing
Minnesota’s baseball program will hold the ninth annual Dan Morgan Golf Open on Aug. 2 at Willinger’s Golf Club in Northfield, Minn.
