A University of Minnesota health care economist in an intended nomination for a post in President Donald Trump’s administration.

Stephen Parente, a Carlson School of Management health care economics professor, was announced as Trump’s intended nominee Friday for assistant secretary for planning and evaluation at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

HHS operates human services and public health programs like the Medicare health insurance program and has implemented parts of the federal Affordable Care Act.

Parente would be the main advisor to the secretary of the HHS for policy development and would help develop legislation and conduct policy research, among other responsibilities, according to the position’s federal website.

From 2013 to 2014, Parente worked for a conservative think tank on a plan to replace the ACA, proposed by former U.S. Rep. Tom Price, who is now Trump’s HHS secretary, the Star Tribune reported.

Parente is the director of the University’s Medical Industry Leadership Institute. He also serves as the Minnesota Insurance Industry Chair of Health Finance.

He was a health policy adviser for presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., during his 2008 presidential bid and served as legislative fellow in the office of Sen. John Rockefeller from 1992 to 1993.

Parente has held leadership positions with the Health Care Cost Institute, a nonprofit research project funded by health insurance companies to analyze insurance data from multiple carriers, according to the Star Tribune.

Parente has worked at the University since 1999, according to his Curriculum Vitae.
