No. 3 Minnesota showed plenty of energy in its match this morning despite the uncharacteristic 10 a.m. start time.
The Gophers defeated the Toledo Rockets 25-14, 25-22 and 25-14 to
claim their second victory in the home Diet Coke Classic Tournament.
Minnesota started out the match with a quick 25-14 defeat led by
junior outside hitter Sarah Wilhite, who had eight kills on the set.
The Gophers saw a tougher Rockets team in the second set and
Toledo got out to an early 9-6 lead, but kills from senior middle blocker
Hannah Tapp, Wilhite and two from freshman outside hitter Alexis Hart gave
Minnesota a lead that would be carried through the end of the 25-22 set win.
The teams battled the closest in the third set and steadily
exchanged points until the Gophers broke out to a solid 21-13 advantage.
Minnesota went on to win the final set on a Toledo service error 25-14 for the
match sweep.
Wilhite led Minnesota’s attack with 16 kills and hit .536. Hannah
Tapp had 11 kills for the Gophers and Hart and junior middle blocker Molly
Lohman had eight each.
Wilhite and sophomore setter Samantha Seliger-Swenson each
contributed a service ace each.
Minnesota closes out the Diet Coke Classic tonight at 7 p.m.
against UW-Green Bay.
