University police received a report at approximately 3:40 p.m. Saturday that a woman jumped off the Washington Avenue Bridge.

University police Chief Greg Hestness said the incident “appears to be a fatality,” adding that the body was recovered from the river.

The jumper was not a student or affiliated with the University, University police Deputy Chief Steve Johnson said.

Johnson said at least one person witnessed the jump.

The case is being handled by the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Water Patrol Unit.
