The University of Minnesota Board of Regents approved a supplemental $10 million request to the Minnesota State Legislature at a Thursday meeting. 

Approved by an 8-1 vote, the supplement to the 2019 budget will keep tuition “flat” for all undergraduate students if approved by the legislature, according to a University release.

The additional ask comes as the state announced a $329 million state budget surplus for the ongoing biennium.

University President Eric Kaler pushed the Board to approve the amendment, citing educational affordability as one of his top priorities.

Regent Michael Hsu opposed the amendment and instead proposed his own amendment that would have reduced tuition for undergrad students.
