Several students in introductory-level chemistry and math courses were approached after classes Wednesday by an eBay scam artist handing out flyers for required course materials. The flyers stated students needed to buy the $35 course software for specific University of Minnesota courses before the next session, along with a contact name, phone number and e-mail. University police have no physical description of the scammer at this time except for that he is male. According to a police report, University police officer Steven Kuhnau called the contact number, playing the role of a student wanting software. The man informed Kuhnau that he was a teaching assistant for the course, but that he was âÄúunavailable to meet.âÄù University professors said several students have already fallen for the scam. The University expects more scamming attempts to follow, and asks that students confirm with instructors what materials are required for courses.
