The Hennepin County District Court has dismissed all claims brought by Jimmy Williams against the University and athletic director Joel Maturi, University of Minnesota General Counsel Mark Rotenberg announced Friday.
Williams, an assistant coach at Oklahoma State last season, said he resigned from his position with the Cowboys and even put his house up for sale; claiming that he had been promised a job on Minnesota coach Tubby Smith’s staff last April.
“This is a complete victory for Tubby, Joel and the university,” Rotenberg said in a press release. “The reason the university never gave Williams an employment contract was the fact that Williams had a prior record of significant NCAA rules violations while working in the Gopher basketball program, as found by the NCAA Infractions Committee. Athletic Director Maturi and Coach Smith could not simply overlook that prior record.”
The Gophers completed Smith’s first season at 20-14, falling to Maryland in the first round of the NIT Tuesday night at Williams Arena.
