The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office filed an aggravated assault charge on Friday against a man who they say stole a car from Dinkytown at gunpoint, according to a statement.
The mid-day sunshine didn’t stop 24-year-old Anthony Richard Smeby, the alleged thief, from stealing a 21-year-old’s car Wednesday afternoon.
Jessica McGovern had just left work when a man approached her car on 14th Avenue Southeast near Vescio’s Italian Restaurant and asked her for money to buy food, according to police.
McGovern glanced away for a moment. When she looked back, she was greeted by a revolver pointed at her face.
The man pulled McGovern out of her 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass and drove away, according to police. McGovern wasn’t injured.
“It’s unusual to have a carjacking in the middle of the day like this,” Minneapolis police Sgt. Bill Palmer said.
Officers from the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department found Smeby in Shoreview, passed out in the driver’s seat of the car, about an hour after the incident. Police say they found a replica handgun in the car.
