A Green Line light rail train struck and killed a pedestrian near a University of Minnesota neighborhood Sunday morning.
The pedestrian was crossing the train tracks at a crosswalk near the Westgate station by the Prospect Park neighborhood at about 10:15 a.m., Metro Transit spokesman Bruce Howard said. She may have been wearing headphones, Howard said, and it appears she didn’t hear the warning tone of an oncoming eastbound train.
Howard said the pedestrian, believed to be in her 40s, was dead when emergency personnel arrived on the scene. Metro Transit used buses to ferry passengers between the two stops on either side of the Westgate station for about two hours before normal train service resumed.
Sunday’s incident is the first Green Line-related fatality since the line opened in June and the 12th fatality involving Metro Transit trains since the Blue Line opened in 2004.
Earlier last week, another pedestrian was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after being hit by a Green Line train in St. Paul.
Business owners and bystanders near the Westgate station, located at the intersection of University Avenue West and Emerald Street Southeast, were still gathered around the scene of the accident until about 11 a.m.
Metro Transit police will lead an investigation into the accident, Howard said.
