Update: WCHA Goaltending Champion Alex Stalock lost his bid for a shutout but managed to hold on to pick up the Bulldogs first win over Minnesota this year. Fairchild’s goal appeared to bounce off of Stoa, who was initially given the goal. But the score sheet was quickly changed. Check back later for a story. Rundown: 6: 08 Minn goal, Fairchild (9) Barriball (23) and Schroeder (32). 10:34 UMD pen, Cascalenda for high sticking. Attendance: 17,611. Second: Kent Patterson started the second period in goal for Minnesota. A spokesman for the team said Kangas was still sick. The sophomore practiced yesterday off and on but was still sick today. Patterson made his first and only start earlier this year against the Bulldogs – playing in a 2-2 overtime tie. Don Lucia broke up the top line for some reason during the second period – replacing Jay Barriball with Tony Lucia. It could be that Lucia wanted to add some physicality to the line, which Tony Lucia brings with him. You couldn’t ask for much more from Patterson on Greer’s goal. The freshman made three saves before Greer snuck the puck between his skate and the far post. Even then the play was reviewed because Akins was nearly in the crease before the goal and made contact with Patterson as the puck was crossing the line. Minnesota still leads in shots 25-18 and went 11-8 in the second. Rundown: 7:36 Minn pen, Fairchild for interference. 12:25 UMD pen, M. Connolly for slashing 14:34 UMD goal, Greer (5) from Akins (8) and Huttel (4). First: Apologies again for no pre-game…no idea what is going on with the Web site.
Men’s Hockey: Bulldogs win 2-1
Published March 19, 2009
Quick notes for the first period…
1. Rosters are virtually identical to the norm.
2. Kangas coughed up the puck from his glove on Sharp’s goal.
3. Hoeffel had a great chance to even it up halfway through the period but was taken down during a breakaway by Greer.
4. Carman got a good tip off a shot by Fischer from the point but couldn’t quite sneak it by Stalock.
5. Minnesota leads 14-10 in shots on goal.
6. Stalock, who plays all over the ice like Jeff Frazee, has come up big throughout the first period. His glove is really hot right now.
7. Following UMD penalties to Huttel and Greer, the Gophers blew almost a full minute of 5-on-3.
Rundown:
3:46 UMD goal, Sharp (21) from Oberg (18).
7:56 UMD pen, Huttel for high sticking.
8:51 UMD pen, Greer for tripping.
15:26 Minn pen, Fisher for holding.
17:25 UMD pen, Gergen for interference.
