Junior Sara Moulton looks like she’s trying to raise the bar even higher after impressive freshman and sophomore campaigns.

Against Middle Tennessee State on Friday, Moulton became the first Gophers pitcher to throw a no-hitter in back-to-back games. The Gophers (10-7) won the game 8-0, their first of three victories on the weekend.

Moulton had no-hit Albany last Sunday in a 1-0 victory.

“She’s doing a great job,” head coach Jessica Allister said. “We’re playing pretty good defense behind her.”

Moulton notched wins in all three of the Gophers’ games during the weekend and now has a 10-4 record. She had 15 strikeouts during Sunday’s 6-4 win over Gardner-Webb.

Minnesota blew late leads in its Saturday and Sunday games, but Allister said the games were very different.

Gardner-Webb used a three-run home run to tie the game in the sixth inning Sunday, and it added another run in the inning to take a one-run lead. Minnesota tied it again in the bottom of the sixth and won on a walk-off, two-run home run by sophomore Tyler Walker in the seventh.

“Today I think we learned a huge lesson,” Allister said Sunday. “If you let teams hang around … it can come back to bite you.”

Allister didn’t seem concerned with the Gophers’ blown lead in Saturday’s win over host Auburn.

“Auburn’s a great team,” Allister said. “I’ll take a win against them any day.”

Walker went 3-for-4 on Saturday with two runs batted in against the Tigers.

Walker’s performance at the plate was a welcome sight for her coach, who had hoped to see more offensive consistency from her team this weekend.

“Tyler Walker’s really starting to swing the bat well,” Allister said. “She’s starting to come into her own this season.”

Allister said the team’s offense as a whole was better this weekend, too.

Minnesota’s game against Charlotte on Saturday was canceled because of cold weather in Alabama. Temperatures were around 37 degrees before the game, and snow flurries fell during the Gophers’ earlier game with Auburn.
