Saturday afternoon, the Gophers women's hockey team defeated Boston University 5-1 to advance to the Frozen Four. Now, the Gophers know their opponent. For the fifth time this season, Minnesota will take on Wisconsin. This time, a trip to the championship game will be on the line.
The Gophers swept Wisconsin 2-1 and 2-0 early in the season at home. A month ago, they swept the Badgers 3-2 and 4-0 in Madison, Wis. Minnesota has not lost to Wisconsin since October 2011, although the two teams tied in early 2012. Since then, the Gophers have rattled off 10 straight wins against their rivals.
The Minnesota/Wisconsin matchup ensures that a WCHA team will play for the national championship. The only three teams to ever win a women's hockey title are Minnesota, Wisconsin and Minnesota-Duluth, all WCHA teams.
The winner of next Friday's Border Battle game will take on the winner of Clarkson/Mercyhurst next weekend in Hamden, Conn.
