Aurora Center relocates to Appleby Hall

The Aurora Center will provide limited service for the next week-and-a-half as it moves to Appleby Hall.

The relocation begins Thursday from its current location in Boynton Health Service. Staff hope to be up and running by Nov. 12.

The Aurora Center helps people affiliated with the University of Minnesota and Augsburg College with concerns about sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking.

The 24-hour help line will be available during the move, but appointments and walk-in services will be limited.

“We will continue to see clients as is needed,” said Jerie Smith, Aurora’s volunteer coordinator.

In 2011, the center helped more than 450 new clients, according to director Katie Eichele.

The move to a new location was originally part of a five-year plan started in 2011, Eichele said. She said she was “pleasantly surprised and appreciative” of how quickly the center was able to move.

Staff wanted to relocate so the center would be closer to other organizations that the center frequently works with, including the Office for Student Affairs, Office for Student Conduct and Academic Integrity and University Counseling and Consulting Services, which all have offices in Appleby Hall. Eichele said the Aurora Center gets many referrals from these partner offices.

“It will be really beneficial to be able to communicate with other offices,” said Jennifer Snider, a student advocacy intern.

Aurora Center volunteers and employees said the Appleby location will be an improvement over the current Boynton offices.

Kestutis Micke, a volunteer advocate, said the new office layout looks like it will be a good mix of public and private space.

“[The Boynton location] can be a bit awkward with the reception area,” Snider said. “It seems closed off.”

Eichele said the new location will be better for current clients and will introduce more people to the Aurora Center’s services.

“Our biggest thing is creating awareness for our services,” she said.
