The Minnesota men’s club water polo team’s title hopes were sunk at Northern Illinois this weekend.
Competing in the men’s Great Plains Water Polo Championship Tournament, the Gophers lost to Western Illinois in the first round 12-9 to drop into the losers’ bracket.
But Minnesota steamed back with a 16-13 win over Iowa in the second round and a 13-5 win over South Dakota in the final round to claim fifth place in the tournament.
Western Illinois rolled to the tournament championship, followed by Kansas, Nebraska and Northern Iowa.
