Armed man escapes police near U

Grayson Lee Clevenger was accused of leading police on a car chase.

Police failed to locate an armed man in the Stadium Village area Tuesday after he led authorities on a high-speed chase across state lines.

Minneapolis police, along with other authorities, went door-to-door with guns drawn near Huron Boulevard, Erie and Essex streets southeast looking for 27-year-old Grayson Lee Clevenger.

Clevenger ran after he led police on a high-speed car chase along Interstate 94, the Ramsey County Sheriff’s office said.

University alumnus Gerry Keyley, who lives on Essex Street, said that police told him they were looking for a man with a goatee and had narrowed their search to the block area.

The chase started in Burnsville, Minn., crossed into Wisconsin and then turned back toward Minnesota on Interstate 94, according to Wisconsin and Minnesota state patrols.

Clevenger, who Burnsville police said was suspect in a burglary case, was fleeing in a stolen Dodge Durango and took the Huron Boulevard exit. He then abandoned his car near Fulton Street and ran.

Two helicopters circled the area while several streets were blocked off for the door-to-door man hunt. Armed officers from multiple Minnesota police agencies used K-9 units to track Clevenger.

Police left the area around 4:30 p.m. without making an arrest.

Early in the search, mathematics senior Charles Hunt was briefly handcuffed while jogging in the area and spent about 20 minutes in the back of a squad car.

Hunt said officers told him he was dressed similarly to Clevenger.

Police questioned psychology senior Kathryn Monikowski as they searched her Essex Street apartment complex.

“They just asked if there was a guy running through my building,” she said. “I want to move. Maybe my rent will go down.”

Andy Mannix, Chris Roberts, Clarise Tushie-Lessard, Kim Melchert and Devin Henry contributed to this report.
