Officials with the University of Minnesota’s Alumni Association Thursday sent a letter via email to University alumni addressing a controversial issue on campus.
The email, written by Alumni Association Board Chair Allison Page with President and CEO Lisa Lewis, explained the events surrounding the Minnesota Student Association’s Nov. 10th rejection of a memorial for the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11th attacks.
The letter explained the reasons why MSA members voted down the measure, citing a lack of specifics for implementing the commemoration. It also assured alumni the motion would be revisited.
The email comes on the heels of a Wednesday statement from University President Eric Kaler after the issue became widely discussed on blogs and in newspapers around campus, and members of the MSA received threats over the story.
“I am confident that we can create a meaningful remembrance that is inclusive to all on campus,” Kaler said in the statement Wednesday. “Hateful speech or actions are contrary to our values as a University.”
