Police arrested a 29-year-old Roseville man on Thursday in connection to the hit-and-run last weekend that led to the death of University of Minnesota student Benjamin Van Handel and injured two others.
The driver did not turn himself in, Minneapolis police Sgt. Steve McCarty said. The man, who is not listed as a student on OneStop, was admitted into Hennepin County Jail Thursday around 6:30 p.m. Last Friday, a car going the wrong way on Fifth Street SE hit two groups of pedestrians, then fled. He’s being held on probable cause for attempted murder without bail.
The man has a DWI and careless driving charge on his record, both from 2008. He got off probation in early March.
The case is still under investigation and police do not know if the driver was impaired at the time of the incident. No charges have been filed.
The Minnesota Daily has a policy of not naming suspects until they are formally charged.
