A University of Minnesota student was hospitalized after being assaulted by a group of men early Sunday morning, according to a Minneapolis police report.
Architecture junior Brian Petereck was trying to break up a fight at a house party near Van Cleve Park in Southeast Como at about 1 a.m. on Sunday when four men attacked him.
Petereck said he saw one of the four men punch a random person at the party, so he tried to intervene. When he did, three other men began to strike him repeatedly.
“What I’m used to is, you just grab someone, hold their arms and maybe they settle down,” he said. “There’s no way I was looking for a fight.”
As the men continued to hit him, Petereck said he heard a bottle break but wasn’t sure if he’d been hit by it.
“When everything died down, I just saw a pool of blood drip down from my head,” he said. “That’s when I knew they broke the bottle over my head.”
Several other partygoers tried to keep him calm as police arrived, he said. The assailants fled the scene before the officers’ arrival.
Petereck suffered a serious cut to his head from being hit by the bottle, he said. Paramedics transported him to the University of Minnesota Medical Center, where he received six stiches.
The report listed the offense as a third-degree assault because Petereck suffered significant bodily harm from the attack, said Minneapolis police Sgt. William Palmer.
Petereck said he is still recovering from the attack.
“I had about a three- or four-day headache,” he said. “I feel pretty sore everywhere.”
