Gophers linebacker Lamonte Edwards was kicked off the team for a violation of team rules, a University of Minnesota spokesperson confirmed Wednesday afternoon.
Edwards was arrested after an iPhone was reported stolen from the weight room in the Gophers athletics building, the Star Tribune reported. He first denied the theft, but later admitted he stole the phone after he was questioned by UMPD, the report said.
Edwards was a touted four-star recruit out of Woodbury High School, according to Rivals.com. He started his Gophers career at running back, but made the switch to linebacker in the second half of his freshman season.
Edwards played in 11 games this past season and recorded eight tackles. It was not announced whether Edwards will leave the University of Minnesota.
